Goodcall Alternatives: Apps, Services and Own Agents

The main Goodcall alternatives are other AI receptionist apps such as Rosie, answering services with people behind the AI such as Smith.ai, and self-hosted voice agents. Goodcall bills per unique caller, Rosie per minute and Smith.ai per call. Dograh, the open-source AI voice agent platform we build, covers the last type, self-hosted or on Dograh Cloud.

Key Takeaways

  • Goodcall bills per unique caller, so repeat callers count once a month.
  • Overage runs from 15¢ to 79¢ per extra caller, depending on the plan.
  • A self-hosted agent swaps one plan fee for separate platform, phone and model lines.

This post is part of our guide to AI receptionists, where renting a receptionist is weighed against owning one. Below, we cover how Goodcall bills and builds, when teams outgrow it, the alternatives by type and one priced month for a small business, then where Dograh fits.

How Goodcall bills and builds

Goodcall charges by unique customer, and that unit shapes every comparison. Goodcall counts each phone number once a month, however often it calls, and leaves out spam and wrong numbers. Starter is $79 a month for 100 unique customers, about 150 calls, then 79¢ for each extra customer. Growth is $129 for 500, then 26¢, and Scale is $299 for 2,000, then 15¢. Goodcall never meters minutes, so long calls cost nothing extra.

Building takes no code. Gabi, Goodcall's builder agent, writes the greeting, questions and steps from a plain description of your business, tests them on practice calls and publishes changes once you approve. Every plan includes a local number, or you can forward your existing line, and a free demo agent lets you hear it before you pay to connect a number. Calls are recorded and transcribed, and you can roll back to the last version.

Signs you have outgrown Goodcall

Most switches start with a plan limit. Starter allows 1 external tool, 1 team member and 30 days of call history. Growth lifts that to 5 tools, 5 team members and 90 days, and Scale to 15 tools, 10 members and unlimited history. Bookings go to Google Calendar and leads to Google Sheets or HighLevel, and anything else connects through an API or an MCP server, each one counting as a tool.

The billing unit can turn against you too. A business with many first-time callers, such as a trades company chasing new leads, pays for every new number past the plan's allowance. Language is another limit, since Goodcall answers in English today, which leaves out a Spanish-speaking customer base.

Ownership is the last trigger. Goodcall is a closed, hosted product, so the agent, the recordings and the call flow live on its servers, and every change goes through its builder. Its strengths are real, including transfers that try up to three people in turn, but they come as Goodcall sets them.

Goodcall alternatives by type

The alternatives fall into a few types, and each one bills in its own unit. The table compares them on that unit and on who takes the call when the AI hands over.

TypeExampleBilling unitEntry priceWho takes the handover

Rosie sells minutes. Professional is $49 for 250 minutes and texts callers a booking link, Scale is $149 for 1,000 minutes with calendar booking and live transfers, and Growth is $299 for 2,000 minutes, adding transfers that try several numbers until someone answers. It speaks English and Spanish.

Smith.ai's AI Receptionist sells calls, from a free plan of 25 calls to Pro at $150 for 75 calls. When a call gets complicated, it can go to Smith.ai's live receptionists in North America, which suits a business that wants a person behind the AI without hiring one.

If you already pay for a business phone system, its own AI receptionist may be the shortest path, and our post on built-in AI receptionists in business phone systems weighs that against a dedicated agent. The last type is an agent you run yourself, on an open-source platform such as Dograh, or on a framework such as Pipecat or LiveKit Agents if your developers want to write it in code.

One month at 300 callers, priced

Here is one example month for a small home services company, built from each vendor's list prices. 300 different people call, making 450 calls of about 3 minutes, so 1,350 minutes in all.

ProductPlan that fitsThe month
GoodcallGrowth, 500 customers included$129 (Starter would be $79 + 200 x $0.79 = $237)
RosieGrowth, 2,000 minutes included$299 (Scale's 1,000 minutes fall short)
Smith.ai AI ReceptionistEnterprise, 500-call level at $1.60 a call$800 (500 calls x $1.60, our arithmetic)
Dograh CloudPay as you go$13.50 platform fee, plus phone and models

On Dograh Cloud, the 1,350 minutes add $13.50 of platform fee. The phone line is billed by your carrier. At Twilio's US rates, a local number is $1.15 a month and each inbound minute is $0.0085 plus $0.0044 for the audio stream, so the month's Twilio bill is $18.57.

The models are the third line, billed by your providers at their own rates, and our breakdown of what an AI voice agent costs per minute prices them. The apps fold models and the number into one price, while Dograh puts each on its own bill. Self-hosted, the $13.50 platform line goes away and your server takes its place, along with the work of building and running the agent.

Where Dograh fits

This type fits a business that wants to own its receptionist. The platform is open source, so you can run it on your own servers or in our managed cloud, choose every model, and keep recordings and transcripts in your own storage when you self-host. Self-hosted Dograh has no per-minute platform fee, but servers, model keys and phone minutes still cost money. Dograh Cloud charges a 1¢-a-minute platform fee.

The receptionist's jobs map onto its features. Answers come from a Knowledge Base of your own files. Bookings and lead details go to your calendar, CRM or texting provider through HTTP API tools during the call, so the booking lands in the system you already use. Several phone numbers can point at the same agent, which helps a business with more than one line.

A business owner adds their own files to a Knowledge Base. A customer calls with a question over the phone line and the platform, and the AI agent answers from that Knowledge Base.
The platform is open source, so you can run it on your own servers or in our managed cloud, choose every model, and keep recordings and transcripts in your own storage when you self-host.

Handovers go through Transfer Call, on Twilio, Telnyx, Plivo, Cloudonix and Asterisk ARI. Dograh dials your team while the caller hears hold music and connects once someone answers. If nobody picks up or the line is busy, the agent gets transfer_failed back and the call carries on, so it can take a message instead.

Pre-recorded clips can play for the lines the receptionist says most, with a cloned voice for everything else, and every call has a full trace and post-call QA. To keep the numbers you already have, see how to run an AI receptionist on your own phone lines. Count your unique callers and your minutes for one real month before you choose. Those two numbers tell you which billing unit, and so which type, suits your calls.

Glossary

Unique customer
Goodcall's billing unit: one phone number counted once a month, however many times it calls. Spam and wrong numbers are not counted, and each new number past the plan's allowance costs 15¢ to 79¢.
Billing unit
What a receptionist product counts to charge you, such as unique callers, calls or minutes. The same month can cost very different amounts on different units, so price your own volume on each.
Answering service
A service where remote people answer your business line. Smith.ai puts its live receptionists behind its AI Receptionist, so complex calls reach a person without you hiring one.
HTTP API tool
A Dograh tool that calls an outside system during the call, such as a calendar to book a slot or a messaging provider to text a confirmation. The business's own systems keep the record.
