Speechify is worth it if you listen to text every day. Premium, at $139 a year, adds natural voices, 5x speed and scanning. Casual readers can stay on the free plan. A business needing a voice on calls wants Dograh, the open-source AI voice agent platform we build, which runs Speechify's voices, self-hosted or on Dograh Cloud.

Key Takeaways

  • Premium pays off for daily listeners, and the yearly plan beats paying monthly.
  • The free plan caps playback at 1.5x and uses robotic voices.
  • The Reader app excludes the API, and business calls need an agent around the voice.

This post is part of our guide to Speechify alternatives, where reading apps are picked on voices, speed and free listening. Below, we give the verdict for each type of reader, then what Speechify does well, where it falls short, its plans and when a business needs Dograh instead.

Is Speechify worth it? The verdict by reader

Speechify Premium is worth it for people who listen to text every day, and hard to justify for anyone else.

A student scans a printed chapter with a phone camera, listens to it at up to 5x and asks for a summary, every day of the week, beside a Premium tag of $139 a year. A casual reader listens on two days a week, on the free plan or the phone's built-in read-aloud.
Judge Premium by how often you actually reach for it, and give the free plan a week first. If you listen most days, the yearly plan beats paying monthly.

Heavy readers come out ahead. If you get through reports, papers or long articles most days, the yearly plan at $139 works out at about $11.58 a month by our arithmetic, and you will use the 5x ceiling, the natural voices and Scan & Listen.

Students are in the same camp. Scanning a printed chapter, hearing it at speed and asking for a summary afterwards are the jobs Premium was built around. If you have dyslexia or ADHD and listen every day, judge it the same way, by how often you actually reach for it, and give the free plan a week first.

Casual readers can skip Premium. A few articles a week fit the free plan, or the read-aloud feature built into your phone or browser.

Creators who want voiceovers are shopping for a different tool. The Reader app plays audio to you, and producing audio for other people is a job for a voice API or a voiceover tool, which our Speechify vs ElevenLabs comparison covers.

Businesses that want a voice on their phone lines need neither the app nor a voice on its own. The last section explains why.

What Speechify does well

Speechify's strength is breadth inside one app. Premium has more than 1,000 voices in over 60 languages, playback up to 5x, and Scan & Listen, which reads printed pages through your phone's camera.

Premium also bundles tools around listening. AI Summaries & Chats answer questions about a document, Voice Typing turns your speech into text, AI Podcasts turn a document into a spoken episode, and a Voice AI Assistant sits on top. Imports from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive bring your files in without downloading them first.

For a reader, that adds up to one place for everything you would otherwise read on a screen. That is the case for paying, and it holds only if you use it often.

Where Speechify falls short

The free plan is the first limit. It caps playback at 1.5x, gives you 10 robotic sounding voices and covers text to speech features only, so scanning, summaries, voice typing and cloud imports all sit behind Premium.

Monthly billing is the second. Twelve payments of $29 come to $348, against $139 for the yearly plan, so paying monthly only makes sense for a short run. Speechify also offers a free trial of Premium. If you start one, check the renewal terms and the date it converts before the trial ends.

The third is scope. The Reader app is for listening. Developer access is a separate product, and a Reader subscription does not include API usage. The app is also not built to answer calls, which matters if you came here for business use.

Speechify's plans in one line each

Speechify has two price lists, one for the app and one for the developer API.

  • Free: playback up to 1.5x, 10 robotic voices, text to speech only.
  • Premium: $29 a month, or $139 billed yearly, with every app feature.
  • SpeechifyAI API: a free plan with 500,000 characters a month, then paid plans from $10 a month, billed per character.

Teams and education plans are sold through Speechify directly. Every other number, from the API's per-character rates to its limits on each plan, is in our breakdown of Speechify pricing.

When a business needs a voice agent instead

A business that wants a voice on its phone lines needs an agent around the voice. An agent hears the caller, works out what they want, checks your systems and answers, all inside one call.

Speechify's API covers the speaking part well. Simba 3.2 ranks 11th of 103 voices on the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena, where listeners vote blind between two clips. Its regions are not data residency, though. Account data, keys, voices and logs sit in the United States on every host.

In Dograh, Speechify is a built-in voice provider. You add your own key in the voice settings, pick Simba 3.2 for English or Simba 3.0 for five more languages, and the agent speaks in Speechify's voice, cloned voices included. Dograh runs the listening, the workflow and the phone line around it.

Two things shape the bill. Pre-recorded clips of your most common lines play with no per-character charge, and Speechify voices everything else. Self-hosted Dograh has no per-minute platform fee, but servers, model keys and phone minutes still cost money. Dograh Cloud charges a 1¢-a-minute platform fee.

Every call also leaves a trace and a QA score for each step, so when the voice misreads a date, you can find the turn. Our post on the Speechify API for voice agents checks whether Simba holds up on a live phone call.
