For reading, Speechify's app is the simpler buy, with scanning and summaries. For live calls, ElevenLabs ranks higher, with Eleven v4 first on the Speech Arena and its own agent platform. Speechify's Simba 3.2 ranks 11th at $6 to $10 per million characters. Dograh, the open-source AI voice agent platform, runs either voice, self-hosted or on Dograh Cloud.

Key Takeaways

  • Speechify's app wins for reading. ElevenLabs' voices rank higher for calls.
  • Simba 3.2 speaks English only. Eleven v4 lists more than 90 languages.
  • Both voices run inside Dograh with your own key, beside open models.

This post is part of our guide to Speechify alternatives, where ElevenLabs is the voice most teams compare Speechify against. Below, we run one sentence through both, pick a winner for reading and for live calls, then compare cloning, languages and API price, and end with a third route.

Same sentence, two voices

The fastest way to compare two voices is to make them read the same hard sentence. Use one that a real agent would say on a call:

"Hi Maria, your appointment is on 03/14 at 2:30 pm, the copay is $45.50, and you can reach us on +1415555XXXX."

Paste this sentence into both free tiers. Speechify's API gives you 500,000 characters a month at no cost, and ElevenLabs' free plan has 10,000 credits, which is plenty for a test. Listen for three things: whether "03/14" comes out as a date, whether "$45.50" sounds like money, and whether the phone number is read digit by digit.

A test sentence with a date, a copay and a masked phone number is pasted into both Speechify and ElevenLabs. A tester in headphones checks whether each voice reads the date as a date, the price as money and the phone number digit by digit, then plays both clips over a desk phone line.
Your own sentence on your own phone path tells you more than any demo clip. Shortlist only the voice that still reads the date clearly on a phone, whichever vendor it comes from.

Then play both clips over a phone line. Most phone calls still reach the listener as 8 kHz audio, while a browser plays 16 kHz, so a voice that sounds rich on headphones can flatten on a call. The voice that still reads the date clearly on a phone is the one to shortlist.

We have not put audio here on purpose. Your own sentence, on your own phone path, tells you more than any clip we could pick.

For reading: Speechify Reader or ElevenReader

For reading, the fair match is app against app. Speechify sells the Speechify Reader app, and ElevenLabs sells ElevenReader.

Speechify's free plan plays text at up to 1.5x with 10 robotic sounding voices. Premium, at $29 a month or $139 a year, adds more than 1,000 natural voices in over 60 languages, 5x speed, scanning of printed pages, summaries and voice typing. ElevenReader's free plan gives 10 hours of listening a month, more than 1,000 voices and 4.0x speed, and its Ultra plan costs $8.25 a month billed yearly.

Speechify wins for daily readers who want scanning, summaries and fast playback in one app. ElevenReader suits lighter listeners who want natural voices on a free plan. Both are tools for listening yourself, and neither is meant for talking to customers.

For live calls: voices, speed and agents

For live calls, ElevenLabs has the higher-ranked voices, and Speechify sells a fast English voice with nothing around it. On the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena, where listeners vote blind between two clips, Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo hold the top two places of 103. Speechify's Simba 3.2 sits 11th. Eleven Flash v2.5, ElevenLabs' fast model, ranks 55th, so check which ElevenLabs model an agent actually runs, as our ElevenLabs review explains.

Speed is close. ElevenLabs gives about 100 ms for v4 Turbo, which it calls its best model for real-time and agents, and about 75 ms for Flash. Speechify measures Simba 3.2's first audible audio at a median of 64 ms over HTTP from a client in US East, and its own figures also show ElevenLabs Flash v2.5 coming out faster from Zurich.

The bigger gap is the agent. ElevenLabs sells ElevenAgents, a hosted platform that turns its voices into phone and web agents. Speechify sells the voice only, so you bring the platform that listens to the caller and calls your systems.

For calls, pick ElevenLabs if you want the top-ranked voice and a hosted agent from one vendor. Pick Speechify's Simba 3.2 if your calls are in English and the per-character rate matters more than the top rank.

Cloning, languages and API price

The two APIs differ most on languages and price per character. The table also shows how each one runs inside Dograh.

SpeechifyAI prices Simba 3.0 and 3.2 at $10, $8 and $6 per million characters on Starter, Pro and Scale. ElevenLabs charges $0.04 per 1,000 characters for v4 Turbo and Flash and $0.08 for Eleven v4, which is $40 and $80 per million.

Cloning works differently on each. Speechify asks the speaker to read an issued consent phrase before it makes a clone, while ElevenLabs asks for 1 to 2 minutes of audio and a confirmation that you have the right to clone the voice. Our post on Speechify voice cloning goes through Speechify's steps.

The third route: your choice of voice in Dograh

You do not have to choose one vendor for good. In Dograh, both Speechify and ElevenLabs are built-in voice providers you set up in the voice settings with your own key, so you can try both on the same agent by switching the voice provider.

On Speechify you pick Simba 3.2 or Simba 3.0. On ElevenLabs you pick anything from Flash v2.5, the default, up to Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo, with any voice ID, cloned voices included. If you are weighing ElevenLabs' own agent against this route, our guide to ElevenLabs alternatives compares them.

The third option is a voice on your own servers. Kokoro 82M runs through Local Models (Speaches), with no per-character bill. Our TTS verbalization benchmark tested how seven open models read dates, prices and phone numbers, and kokoro-82m was the most accurate at 0.61, so put the test sentence above through Kokoro too.

Pre-recorded clips help whichever voice you choose. The lines your agent says on most calls play as recordings, and the voice handles everything else.

Self-hosted Dograh has no per-minute platform fee, but servers, model keys and phone minutes still cost money. Dograh Cloud charges a 1¢-a-minute platform fee. The voice stays on your own Speechify or ElevenLabs bill either way.

Glossary

Time to first audio
How long a voice API takes from receiving text to sending the first sound you can hear. On a call it adds directly to the pause before the agent answers.
Speech Arena
Artificial Analysis's text-to-speech leaderboard, where listeners vote blind between two clips. Eleven v4 ranks 1st and Speechify's Simba 3.2 11th of 103.
Instant voice cloning
Making a voice from a short recording with no model training. ElevenLabs asks for 1 to 2 minutes of audio, and Speechify for 10 to 30 seconds plus a spoken consent phrase.
Voice ID
The identifier a voice provider gives a stock or cloned voice. In Dograh you paste it into the voice setting with your own key.
